Herman Munster

More than Frankenstein himself, Frankenstein's creature has gotten quite a bit of face time on the small screen. He has appeared in a variety of reincarnations, many being a bit comical. A prominent version of the creature is Herman Munster, the father of the Munster family from a television series of the same name, The Munsters. Herman is a simple minded 'man' who looks almost exactly like Karloff's portrayal of Frankenstein's monster in the 1931 film, Frankenstein. Unlike the monster in the film, Herman is a kind, loving father figure who has the benefit of family who loves him in return.

Some interesting television reincarnations and reinventions can be found in Penny Dreadful and American Horror Story. Below are some classic examples of television reincarnations. Check out the full list of  FRANKENSTEIN IN TELEVISION.

The Addams Family television series first aired in 1964. It was based off of Charles Addams' comic of the same name which was first published in The New Yorker in 1938. One of the minor characters, Lurch, is the Addams' butler and bears a striking resemblance to the 1931 Frankenstein monster.

The character has also made appearances in films  and stage plays based on the Addams Family narrative.

The creature makes 'guest appearances' in television shows from live action to animated. He is sometimes the villain along with his other monster counterparts, the wolfman, the mummy, and Dracula.

Other times, as in The Monkees episode, "I Was a Teenage Monster," he is merely misunderstood.
