Penny Dreadful

Penny Dreadful, set in Victorian England, had many 'monster' characters including witches, demons, werewolves, and vampires. More specifically, similar to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the series included specific literary and cinematic characters from the horror genre:

• Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his creatures, Lily & John Clare, 
• Dracula, Mina Harker, and Professor Abraham Van Helsing
• Dorian Gray
• Dr. Henry Jekyll, who upon his father's death inherits the title of Lord Hyde
• Ethan Lawrence Talbot, a.k.a. Ethan Chandler

Though Victor's creature, later to name himself John Clare, is introduced to the audience in a horrific manner, we later find that, like the creature in Shelley's novel, he is extremely intelligent and sensitive.

Unlike the creature in Shelley's novel, he chooses to stop murdering and seeking revenge, despite the cruel treatment he received from society. That may be largely in part because he found a caring and genuine friend in Vanessa Ives and, even later, was able to reconnect with his dying son and his wife.

Interestingly, it is John Clare who we see last in the series. (BEWARE: SPOILERS!!!) The last scene of the series is the funeral of Vanessa Ives. After all of the other characters leave, the creature goes to her grave to mourn the one true friend he ever had. It is a touching moment and fitting that the creature, John Clare, should have the last moments of the audience's attention and sympathy. Of all of the characters, he turned out to be the kindest and most human.
